Oscar-winning ‘The Shape of Water’ has captivated viewers with its unique blend of unconventional romance, Cold War tensions, and rich, fantastical elements. But like any cinematic creation, it comes with both pros and cons.
Undoubtedly, one of the major pros of the movie is its inspiring, heartfelt narrative. Guillermo Del Toro weaves a beautiful tale about two outcasts seeking companionship and love in an unforgiving world. His masterful storytelling is further bolstered by his detailed, exquisite visuals. The outstanding performances by Sally Hawkins and Doug Jones evoke deep emotions, showcasing love that transcends language and form.
Another noteworthy pro is Alexandre Desplat’s enchanting score. Its simplicity, beauty, and subtlety perfectly complement the film’s warm tone and emotional depth.
However, ‘The Shape of Water’ is not without its cons. The narrative sometimes leans into predictability which can detract from the intended dramatic tension. Another downside is that the film fails to give significant depth to its supporting characters. Michael Shannon’s antagonist Richard Strickland, for example, could have benefitted from more nuanced treatment. His character lacked depth, reducing him to a standard, one-dimensional villain.
Lastly, while the movie’s vintage aesthetic is visually appealing, the heavy use of green-tinted visuals can feel overused, ultimately creating a visual monotony that mitigates the stunning cinematography.
‘The Shape of Water’ is an emotive, visually stunning film with equal bouts of brilliance and flaws. Regardless of its cons, the movie’s pros significantly overshadow its drawbacks, making it a memorable viewing experience.
